A lot of modems manufactured today are 'winmodems' and they are a pox on the Linux community. Why? Well, a winmodem really isn't a modem, it's only half of one. This is because a lot of the functionality of a winmodem requires a Windows API and the main CPU of your personal computer to actually work as a modem. In simple terms, without Windows, a winmodem is like a nice paperweight, or cheese grater, but is not good for connecting to a service provider. Why do manufacturers do this? That's easy. It's cheaper to make a winmodem than it is to make a complete modem. So the moral of this story is, if you want to use Linux and connect to the Internet, make sure your system is winmodem free before you convert. You'll be glad you did. Ing.
